The Haringey Tree Protectors are a group of local people campaigning to protect mature trees in our urban environment.
We take non-violent direct action to protect endangered trees in Haringey but also to aim to work proactively to provide solutions to urban tree management issues. There are 100+ people in our core group, 250+ supporters on Facebook and 1700+ supporters on Twitter from all different backgrounds who work together to help protect threatened trees in our neighbourhoods.
As the climate crisis deepens, threats to trees increase too: from big business, insurance claims, private developers, council planners, as well as residents and landlords on private land and in gardens.
We believe central government and local authorities have a duty to inform residents how important their mature trees are and how they will help protect them in the future. At the moment an excessive number of trees are being felled for minor reasons in people’s gardens and on private land - perhaps for light, space, neatness, even fear, because they don’t understand the value of ageing trees. But more ‘light’ brings heat and when it hits 40 degrees in the UK, with no trees to shade and cool us, health problems get much, much worse.
We are always looking for caring, expert people to help with our local campaigns and to connect to people who have similar interests in tree protection in different parts of the country and around the world.
So do get in touch on our contact page.
Take a stand for trees.
Trees generate oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They are the lungs of the planet and our survival depends on them.
Trees absorb and disperse floodwater, acting as natural pumping systems which help reduce flooding. Patio over your front and back garden at your peril!
Trees create shade and help reduce the Heat Island Effect in cities. Trees can reduce temperatures in streets by more than 10 degrees.
